Yoga Props for Navigating Your Practice

Day 38 Props.jpg

We use yoga props in our practice to help us find appropriate alignment for deeper healing. They can help to make you more comfortable in some poses, and allow for deeper stretching in others.

You can improvise and get creative with basic supplies that you already have on hand. I recommend that you gather the following things:

  • Yoga Mat – If you don’t already own a yoga mat, I think you’ll want to. The yoga mat defines our space for the practice. You can spread out a large towel or blanket as a substitute. {here’s my favorite mat}*

  • Blankets – Blankets are used for support in some of our poses, so have a few of them on hand. I really like to use the woven yoga blankets, but you could also use large towels to fold and roll for support. {my favorite blanket}*

  • Blocks – Yoga blocks help keep us properly aligned in yoga poses, and they are used as support in relaxation postures. I recommend two blocks…or some towels you can roll up for support. {favorite blocks}*

  • Strap – A yoga strap is used to maintain proper alignment and increase range of motion. If you don’t have one you can use a regular belt, the tie belt from your bathrobe or a man’s tie. {favorite yoga strap}*

  • Bolster – If you have a yoga bolster that’s great. If you don’t, just grab some firm pillows to stack.

  • Eye pillow – A small eye pillow filled with rice or flax seed is a great way to block out light and soothe yourself during guided meditation practices. You can also place a small folded towel or scarf over your eyes if you’d like.

  • Epsom salt – Our yoga practice creates space in the body that may not have been moved or stretched in a long time. When we stretch we release emotions and tension from the body. Soaking in an Epsom salt bath reduces inflammation in the body, and that will be a nice compliment to your yoga practice.
