Desktop Downward Dog

Desktop Downward Dog – Need a little stress relief during your work day? Here’s a pose that’s quick and easy to access, and a great way to relieve tension in the neck and shoulders! Add a few breath cycles and the intention of letting go, and you’ll be refreshed and ready for the next round in no time!

Benefits: This pose releases tension in the neck, shoulders, upper back and chest; relieves headaches and tight muscles; stretches the spine and relieves low back pain; calms the mind and nervous system as the head bows and releases; serves as a time-out during a hectic work day.

How to: Place your hands about shoulder width apart on a table and scoot your chair back until your arms are fully extended. Gently press into the hands and draw your shoulder blades wide on the back, and down from the ears. Allow your upper body to hang, allow your head to relax and release. You might even choose to release tension in the jaw by opening and closing the mouth wide a few times. Close your eyes and pay attention to your inhales and exhales, following the breath as it enters and leaves your body. Stay here, stretching and breathing, for several breath cycles.

Mantra: “Breathing deeply refreshes my mind and body.”
